So as you may know, I asked about getting a new car, and which one you guys would choose. Here's more to the story...

Of course as I was begging the question - ditch the jalopy, or run it into the ground risking it? This morning, my car freaking cracks its second radiator and I'm stranded for a bit. There goes more money into the damned thing...

At least I'm going to check out some GTI's and FoST's next week. My dad is still really trying to tell me to stick with the shitbox, but I'm just not certain. I can't see sinking more and more money into an unreliable car.

The only thing is I'm trying to pay off my school loans in 1 year, whereas it may be a bit longer should I lower those massive payments to a more reasonable amount to make room for the new car.

This sucks.

On a bright side, the pictured Focus is my loaner car, and it actually drives kinda nice. I prefer it over my car, though it makes me think I will really, really like the FoST.

Based on the limited info from your post above, if you're concerned about cash or your parents are, maybe you should look at something cheaper than a GTI or FoST?

Well cash is always a concern. It is whether I really want to take on the burden of a bigger payment. I actually had budgeted for it in case this does happen.

at the other end of the spectrum, I have a few friends saying I should grab an old civic EX and just ride that out since they last forever.

I'm pretty much in the same situation as you I think, perhaps a year ahead (grad in '13). my decision was keep the hooptie and pay as much of the loan as possible while saving a down payment and building more credit. I believe that that is a sound decision although I also haven't sunk more than 200$ in my hooptie in the last year and a half.

Either way I would recommend keeping your beater through the winter. wait to get a new one till the snow and ice threat has subsided

I guess its a balance between finding something fun and something with huge payments. Honestly, dont buy something you arent going to enjoy because that the worst.
